The location of this project in Snodland has been an industrial site for over 100 years, it currently houses paper mills for Smurfit Kappa group, one of the largest paper-based and corrugated packaging companies in the world. We have been involved on the site with Smurfit a number of times, supporting their buildings through their entire life cycle.
Most recently we were involved in the creation of the new building for Paper Machine PM9 and demolition of PM7 and PM8 buildings.
We performed the topographic survey, site investigation and CDM consultancy work. We also carried out the civils contract preparation and superstructure tender packages from a contract procurement point of view, encompassing four of the six services we can offer generally to all prospective clients on any project.
It was a particularly interesting development, because of the location’s history and ground conditions, with cannon balls apparently manufactured on site in the distant past. The mills are situated on reclaimed ground in the alluvial deposition area of the river. Hence there was a lot of soft soil and made ground underneath the site. Due to the size of the plant and machinery we had to allow for foundations that supported the very heavy loads, with piling taken down 20 metres into the ground.
