This site has been in industrial use for over 100 years. It currently houses paper mills for the Smurfit Kappa Group, one of the largest paper-based and corrugated packaging companies in the world. We have worked on a variety of projects on the site, supporting their buildings through their entire life cycle.

Most recently we were involved in the creation of the new building for Paper Machine PM9 and demolition of PM7 and PM8 buildings.

It was a particularly interesting project, given the site’s history and ground conditions. The mill is situated partly on reclaimed ground in the alluvial deposition area of the river, so there was a significant thickness of made ground and soft alluvial soil present beneath the site. Beneath the soft alluvial clay and peat there is a layer of gravel, above the Gault Clay and Folkestone Formation sand. Groundwater within both the gravel and Folkestone formation had to be protected, necessitating localised remediation before piled foundations, up to 20m deep, could be constructed to support the very heavy building and paper machine loads.

We undertook the topographic survey, site investigation and CDM consultancy work. We also prepared the civil engineering and superstructure tender packages, and undertook various ancillary works during construction, including the specification and supervision of remediation works, the preparation of a piling risk assessment with respect to groundwater protection, and the design of the working platform for the piling works.
